There are a lot of people who have dreamed about purchasing a sailboat and going on a romantic trip around the world. Some people even talk to their friends and family about the idea, but then they are met with negative comments about how the voyage would be too dangerous, too expensive, or too difficult. These negative comments are enough to dissuade some from going on this voyage.
However, for other people, the idea of seeing the silhouette of a sailboat against the setting sun and the thought of all of the adventures and new discoveries they would have with their sailboat is too strong for them to let go of. As romantic as the idea of sailing across the world is, the reality is that a sailboat weighs a couple of tons since it’s made of fiberglass and steel and requires a level of skill to operate it. A lot of preparation needs to be made before setting out on this type of voyage. However, if this is a person’s lifelong dream, they just need to make the decision to do it.
In truth, a person does not need to know how to sail a boat before buying a sailboat. There are a lot of courses that will provide a person with a US sailing certification. Most of these courses require a person to be out on the water for seven days with an instructor. By the end of the first day of these courses, most people have what it takes to single-handedly run the sails, master tacking, jibbing, and steering in and out of a harbor. Within a few days, a person has the skill set that they need to set out on their own.
Usually, when a person first starts out, they want the simplest boat that is the least expensive. However, over time, things like having comfortable interior cushions, a high-end GPS system with satellite imagery, and nice speakers become important. Most people will outgrow their first boat within a few years and upgrade to something nicer. When they do, there are many stores online that offer boaters the opportunity to “shop today” to get any upgrade they may want for their boat, their dock, or their boat lift.
For a novice, the water can be scary. However, with time, being on the water goes from being something that is terrifying to being as natural as driving on the road.
