Myles Brand, famously known as the man who fired Bobby McKnight at Indiana and more recently the president of the NCAA, died Wednesday of pancraetic cancer. He was 67. Brand was known for his belief that athletics was only part of the college experience. He often came down on the side of educational leaders and soclastic practices over athletic advocates. Who replaces Brand at the head of the NCAA will indicate where college athletics is headed. Will they choose an academic who will hold up scolasitc standards, or a media or athletic leader whose experiece and priorities could point the association in a different direction?
