Kobe Bryant’s biggest assist last season wasn’t the pass that set up Derek Fisher’s game-winning three point field goal in Game 4 of the NBA Finals or the alley-oop dish to Lamar Odom streaking down the lane on a fast break. In fact, his most powerful pass didn’t even come in front of a packed [...]
I was recently asked by a friend of mine, who I would consider to be this year’s Cy Young Award winner for the American League. Immediately, names like Roy Halladay, Justin Verlander, C.C. Sabathia, Zach Greinke and Felix Hernandez came to mind. It’s easy to see why these names were not hard to conjure as they all make for very “sexy picks” in a league often dominated by the kind of pitcher who has a rare ability to combine power, movement, strategy, and endurance over the course of a 162- game season. But as I spent more time delving into the matter, which has no clear cut answer, there was one name that stood above the rest: Scott Feldman.
April 22, 2005. The top-ranked women’s lacrosse team in the country, the Northwestern Lady Wildcats were loudly conversing as they devoured their pregame meals inside a dingy cafeteria at John Hopkins University. They weren’t just preparing for another grueling match with a tough opponent. They were hearing the inspirational story of a young girl, whose [...]
For John Q Public baseball fans out there, a feel good story seems so out of place and unlikely in a culture now tarnished by the irrevocable acts of those who tried to represent this all- American pastime. Alexandra Scott was only eleven months old when her parents were told she had cancer. Kenny Herriot was thirty-eight when he learned that he would be paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life. Alex and Kenny’s stories of pain and struggle seem as wide as the ocean that separated them. And [...]
If you went to buy a poster of your favorite collegiate athlete odds are Jacob Madonia, a discus and shot-putter for the University of Buffalo’s Track & Field team, would not be anywhere near the top of your list. He’s never willed his team to greatness like Tim Tebow or Tyler Hansborough, nor has he [...]
Each fall millions of fans pack stadiums, bars, and households across the country in a four month celebration known as the NFL season. To most of us, each season is nothing short of an on-again off-again love affair with our favorite teams and gridiron greats. Games are not defined as much by first downs and [...]
These past few weeks got me thinking about how proud I am to be an American. For most people these sentiments are common this time of year. It’s impossible during July 4th weekend not to appreciate living in the land of opportunity, especially with a bombardment of red, white, and blue fireworks, scenic images of [...]
For those of you who agonized over the United States Soccer team’s crushing loss against powerhouse Brazil in the Confederations Cup Final, I have two words of advice for you: be thankful. As you watched Landon Donovan effortlessly dribble the ball up the pitch or Tim Howard gracefully yet controversially rob Kaka of a game-tying [...]
By the title of this piece you are probably assuming the premise of this article will be to honor Roger Federer for winning his 14th Grand Slam, or to commend Kobe Bryant on what looks to be the finishing touches on his 4th career NBA Title. If you are looking for that, I apologize in [...]
